The English Team Postpone Squad Reveal for Latest T20 Match as Weather Force Indoor Practice

The English side's preparations for a warm, arid T20 World Cup in India in February brought them on Wednesday to a cool, drizzly New Zealand's largest city, where they were compelled to conduct the last training session before their next match against the Kiwis inside. The purpose isn't always clear what purpose these two-team contests serve, what valuable insights could possibly be learned – but on this occasion, for at least a squad member, that is not an issue.

The Batter's Changed Position: From Opener to Lower Down

The cricketer says he is “continuing to develop”, and if it is the type of statement regularly trotted out even by players who have already reached the pinnacle of their game, in his case it is undeniably true. After forging his reputation as a top-order batter, mostly as an starting player, Banton suddenly finds himself a completely unfamiliar role, batting at the middle order. “There weren’t really too many conversations,” he said. “They simply brought me back into the squad and informed me, ‘You’re going to bat in the middle order now.’”

Prior to returning in June, the vast majority of Banton’s 162 professional T20 appearances had been as an opener, a further portion at No3 and the remaining handful – but for seven balls at No 7 in a T20 Blast game previously – at fourth place. If England plan to retain him in this altered role he requires every possible opportunity to get used to it, and he has figured out one thing: “Playing down the order,” he surmised, “is a lot harder than starting the innings.”

Varied Performances in the Tour

Banton said that “there’s going to be times where it comes off and it appears brilliant and on other occasions where it fails”, and the first two games of the winter in New Zealand have seen one of each. In the first, he faced nine balls and scored nine runs before holing out to long-on; in the next game, he faced 12 deliveries, hit runs, and finished not out.

Reflections on Return and Growth

The current series has witnessed Banton return to the country in which he first played for his country in late 2019. Since then, he drifted back out of the team, made a brief return in 2022 and then passed a long period in the wilderness before coming back for Harry Brook’s initial match as England captain. “On the flight over, it was weird,” he said. “Time has passed when I made my debut. It feels like a lot has happened in that period. I’ve learned a lot about me. The few years after I was left out from the national team was a tough time for me. I had a couple of years stretch where I was working myself out.”

Backing from Coaching Staff

Currently, he has been assigned something new to work out. Banton is grateful to have been given another chance, and also for the coach's skill to make him comfortable while he works out how best to seize the opportunity. “The coach approached me before [the recent game] and said, ‘Go out and play your natural game.’ It’s nice to have that liberty,” Banton said. “I realize it’s only a small thing from the staff, but it gives me the backing that if it doesn't work, it’s not the end of the world. It is so small but for me it’s, ‘OK, I’ve got the approval from the head coach and I can step up and perform.’”

Shift in Location and Team Selection

After playing the initial matches of the contest at Christchurch’s Hagley Park, a stadium with expansive playing area, England finish the series on the next day at Eden Park, a multi-use rugby and cricket ground where the field edge at a short distance is among the most compact in the sport. With changeable conditions and an unfamiliar venue they have abandoned their usual practice of announcing their lineup two days in advance while they determine if their ideal XI here will be the same as the side that began the earlier fixtures.

Squad Adjustments for ODI Series

Next, they move to the coastal town and turn focus to ODIs, with a slightly amended team: three players drop out, while four others join the squad. Most newcomers arrived in the city on the same day but the scheduling of Archer’s Test match buildup means he will arrive two days later, flying with two fellow bowlers, fast bowlers who are also building towards the longer format in Australia but are not in the white-ball squad. Consequently Archer will miss the opening game at the venue, the ground where he was racially abused on his sole prior visit, in 2019.
