The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.

The vote against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The dispute erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if the student were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
