The hosts secured a 93-run victory

Pakistan halted world champions South Africa's unbeaten run by sealing a 93-run victory in an exciting and hard-fought first Test in Lahore.

South Africa, whose 10-Test winning streak in the longest format culminated in victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final in June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.

Having resumed on 51-2, they saw the dismissal of century-maker De Zorzi leg before wicket to left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the tightly balanced run chase in Pakistan's favor.

Left-arm spinner Noman, who took 10-191 in the match, dismissed Stubbs for two and clean bowled Brevis, who put up a fight with a run-a-ball 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid Khan also took advantage of significant spin to terminate opener Ryan Rickelton's innings - he lasted 145 balls for 45 runs - and Shaheen came back in the afternoon session to dismiss the lower order with a fine display of reverse-swing bowling.

He had Verreynne leg before for 19 and dismissed Prenelan Subrayen and Rabada to secure the win.

It was both sides' opening game of the 2025-27 Test championship cycle and propels Pakistan directly into the number two spot after table-toppers Australia.

Their victory was founded on key performances of ninety-three by opener Imam and, importantly, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to three hundred and seventy-eight.

After that slow bowlers Noman and Sajid Khan took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they did in their series victory over England last year, to maintain their lead.

The second and last match starts on 20 October.
