Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
The former director's lawyer submitted the answer acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for several causes including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being targeted.
The former director was formally accused soon after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they planned to file multiple petitions to throw out the proceedings before a trial, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to assume control of the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.
Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.
Following the reading to the court state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the moment, he was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against the candidate were not filed, causing criticism from Republicans as well.
The federal government allege James Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities information about the government examinations.
Prosecutors also charge the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, hinder and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Through a recording the former director posted to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was not guilty and charged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump shared on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, charge the former director and other people.
